After five years leading the England Test team, Joe Root decided to resign or leave as captain on Friday 15 April.

Root leads England in 64 matches, winning 27 of them. According to this record, means that he has won the most matches as England's men's Test captain.

During his Era, Root made memorable victories, including a 4-1 home victory over India in 2018, a 3-1 victory over South Africa in 2020, and two-Test series victories in Sri Lanka.

The decision to resign as the captain was made after a 1-0 series defeat to the West Indies in the Caribbean. Earlier in the Ashes series, England was defeated by Australia 4-0.
